"Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer."
John F. Kennedy
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our current network was started in February, 2013. From this time until January, 2014, when we received our tax exemption, the American Legion, Post 28, of Roswell, NM allowed us to operate under their umbrella. In 2014 we transported 1,413 veterans and traveled 187,495 miles.
Our 100 % volunteer transportation network uses nine vans, six of which were donated by the State of New Mexico in 2015. Five are in Roswell, (our base of operations), two in Hobbs, one in Carlsbad and one in Artesia. Our drivers transport veterans to any VA hospital or out-patient clinic, mainly Albuquerque and Artesia. Our Hobbs driver travels to any West Texas hospital or clinic, mainly Big Springs, Lubbock and Amarillo. We also transport veterans to any other medical appointment in the region.
Our Roswell drivers travel to Albuquerque Monday through Wednesday, and to Artesia Monday through Thursday. The Hobbs and Carlsbad drivers travel any day of the week as needed.
Veterans must schedule rides with our secretary, preferably 72 hours in advance. Veterans in Hobbs must schedule their appointments with the Hobbs driver.
We are often asked: “Why are we doing this?”
Our answer is, “If not us, then who?” We are proud to transport our veterans who so bravely served for our country.
We are sustained by contributions, donations and foundation grants. We receive no monetary assistance from any government entities. We are the only network operating at no cost to the veterans in S.E. New Mexico and West Texas.
From January through June of 2015, we transported 594 veterans and traveled 84,987 miles.
